Sailing Superyachts – Zephyr’s story
What’s immediately evident about about Zeph is his unwavering passion for his job. Over his two years as a Bosun on ADIX, a 64-metre, three-mastered schooner and one of the largest and renown sailing superyachts . Zeph has journeyed far and wide across the globe on her. He’s enjoyed taking part in world renowned regattas in the Caribbean, the UK and Europe. For Zeph, participating in sailing regattas is like stepping into a world where wind, water, and adrenaline converge.
The atmosphere is alive with a unique blend of camaraderie and competition. As the wind blows, the boat leans, sails are hoisted or lowered and the deck crew’s skills, decisions and maneuver’s are all tested in the heat of the moment. The deck team swells in size with sailors from all over the world, as extras to man the decks. Making friends and lifelong bonds with people throughout these events are some of the amazing aspects of this job that he loves.
Beyond these regions, he’s sailed in places like Moorea and Tahiti in French Polynesia, Auckland, Australia, the coasts of Costa Rica and Panama. He’s crossed both Pacific & Atlantic oceans, embarking on incredible adventures both on land and at sea.
His strong work ethic and easygoing nature make him an exceptional Bosun. He manages his deck crew not only through mentoring but also by example. His philosophy is simple: Do what you’re supposed to do and do it well, step up to any occasion, and go above and beyond what’s expected. He fully embraces an empathetic leadership approach which fosters camaraderie, motivation and pride among all the deckhands.
His love of sailing matches his passion for the job itself. Originating from a background in building and construction, he brings practical thinking and maintenance skills to his role. He revels in the daily variety of tasks which often involves trouble shooting and practical problem solving. Zeph always embraces any opportunity to take on more responsibility and loves taking on challenges. This is reflected in his commitment to his professional development, always taking courses to improve his credentials and abilities.
He encourages anyone wanting to move up the ranks take on this work ethic. Instead of being pushy and demanding, he suggests exceling in whatever task is expected of you. Continuously learn new skills and perfect them and willingly, take on projects and approach challenges enthusiastically. Navigating the fine line between being a boss and a friend comes naturally to him. He skillfully manages people’s emotions and feelings with sensitivity and empathy, motivating and encouraging them to excel individually and as a team.
Zeph has no plans to change his life any time soon and is looking forward to many more years doing more of the same; sailing, exploring new places, working and loving what every day offers.
